Kick Off the New Year with Serious Fun
The start of a new year is an opportunity to reset, refocus and bring people together around what comes next.
A well-designed kick-off event can introduce new objectives, reconnect colleagues and create the energy your team needs to approach the new year with confidence. But presentations and strategy sessions can only take you so far. If you want people to leave feeling genuinely motivated, the experience around the agenda matters too.
Indoor team building creates an opportunity for colleagues to step away from their usual roles, communicate differently and start the year with a shared experience. More than an entertaining addition to the day, the right activity can reinforce the qualities your organisation will rely on throughout the year; from collaboration and creative thinking to trust and adaptability.
Here are three of our most popular indoor events for starting next year with purpose.
Soapbox Derby: Turn Plans into Action
New-year kick-offs are often full of ambitious ideas. Soapbox Derby gives teams the chance to put some of the skills behind those ambitions into practice.
Armed with basic materials, tools and a shared objective, teams must design and build their own soapbox from scratch. They’ll need to develop a plan, divide responsibilities, manage their time and solve problems together before their creation can take to the track.
Different strengths emerge throughout the experience. Some people lead the design, others focus on construction, branding or race strategy. Every contribution plays a part, and every vehicle must pass its all-important MOT before it can compete.
It’s a lively, competitive challenge, but its value extends beyond the race. Soapbox Derby demonstrates what can happen when people combine their skills, communicate clearly and work towards one shared result; an ideal message to carry into the year ahead.
Perfect for: collaboration, creative problem-solving, leadership and effective delegation.
Taskmasters: Start the Year Thinking Differently
A golden envelope lands on the table, nobody knows what is inside… everyone has an opinion about what to do next.
Taskmasters challenges teams with a varied mix of creative, practical and problem-solving tasks. Some require an immediate response, while others give teams a few precious minutes to develop a plan. Either way, there is very little time to overthink.
Because every challenge is different, a wide range of personalities and abilities can shine. Quick thinkers, careful planners, confident performers and quietly creative colleagues all have opportunities to make an impact.
That makes Taskmasters particularly effective for teams returning after the festive break or entering a year of change. It helps people break out of familiar routines, approach problems from new angles and become more comfortable adapting when the answer is not immediately obvious.
With an entertaining host keeping the experience moving, the room quickly fills with laughter, energy and healthy competition. Beneath the fun, teams are exploring how they respond to pressure, communicate their ideas and make decisions together.
Perfect for: creative thinking, adaptability, team energy and revealing hidden strengths.
Infil-Traitors: Put Communication and Trust to the Test
Strong teams need trust, but what happens when somebody in the group is secretly working against you?
Infil-Traitors is an immersive experience combining puzzles, codes, tactical tasks and games of skill. Teams must work together to collect gold while trying to identify the Traitor disrupting their progress.
Suddenly, every decision is open to suspicion. Was that a genuine mistake, a questionable strategy or a deliberate act of sabotage?
The challenge encourages teams to listen carefully, question assumptions and communicate clearly when they don’t have the full picture. It keeps people engaged while introducing plenty of strategy, tension and debate.
The experience ends with a final discussion in which players must defend their performance and identify who they believe has been working against them. To win, a team must do more than collect the most gold; they must successfully expose the Traitor.
For organisations entering a year that will require strong relationships, effective communication or closer collaboration, it creates an effective way to explore those themes.
A strong choice for: communication, strategic thinking, trust and team connection.
Build Your Kick-Off Event Around Your Goals
A kick-off event should reflect what your organisation wants to achieve; not follow a standard formula.
Soapbox Derby is ideal for teams that need to turn ideas into action and work towards a shared result. Taskmasters encourages fresh thinking and adaptability. Infil-Traitors puts communication, observation and trust under the spotlight; to name but a few of our team building experiences.
Each experience can complement a wider kick-off agenda, helping you translate the themes discussed in meeting rooms into something teams can actively experience together.
At Off Limits, we start by understanding your people, objectives and vision for the year ahead. From sourcing the right venue to shaping the format and managing delivery on the day, we bring every element together to create an experience that feels purposeful, energising and entirely your own.
Start Planning Your Kick-Off
